Uninsulated industrial pipes, machines, and pieces of equipment give you a few problems. For example, you won't benefit from energy savings. You also create safety hazards for any personnel who accidentally touch hot pipes or parts that don't have a protective covering.
Conventional insulation products are a viable retrofit in some environments, they aren't always an ideal solution. Sometimes, removable insulation covers are a better option.
While you can buy off-the-shelf insulation jackets, custom-made products are sometimes a more effective solution. When might you want to use custom covers?
1. You Have to Insulate a Complex System
Some pipes, machines, and components are hard to insulate. They might have complex or large configurations that make it difficult to access all uninsulated parts. Or, they might have irregular shapes that won't fit under off-the-shelf covers.
Here, you might have to compromise by leaving some areas uninsulated. You might have to use multiple jackets to get the complete coverage you need.
You might see some insulation improvements, but you won't get complete benefits. If a cover is too big or too small, or if it leaves areas uncovered, then it loses some of its insulative properties.
If you order custom removable covers, then you create jackets that fit your needs more precisely. Your manufacturer makes the covers to fit your exact specifications.
So the covers won't be too small or too big. They will have a snug fit that gives complete and effective insulation. The covers go over or wrap around the items they protect, so you don't have to worry about managing hard-to-access areas.
2. You Want a Targeted Materials Solution
Any insulation cover gives some protection. However, you might miss out on benefits if you use the wrong insulating material for your system and environment.
For example, outdoor pipes and machines might need a different kind of insulation to indoor ones. They'll probably be exposed to a higher range of temperature extremes. So, they need a higher grade of protection against overheating or freezing.
Safety is also a consideration. If your machines, pipes, or components carry or contain hazardous or combustible substances, then you should protect them against fire. You should look at fire-rated materials here.
Or if you have a lot of pipes and parts that heat up to dangerous temperatures, then you might need to use thicker materials. These will prevent touch burns if someone accidentally comes into contact with the item.
If you order custom removable insulation covers, then you choose which materials you use in each jacket. You can cover areas that need basic energy management insulation with regular materials.
However, if you have special needs, then you can use more appropriate materials. You can even mix and match the materials you use in a cover to target specific areas under it.
3. You Want More Access Control
One of the biggest benefits of removable insulation covers is the fact that they don't attach permanently. If you need to do maintenance or repair work on a pipe, connection, or machine, you can access the area by removing its cover. Once you're done, you put the cover back in place again.
However, you might not get the easy and accurate access you need if you use off-the-shelf covers. Some products don't have any access points; those that do might not have them in the right places.
So, you might have to take the whole cover off to work on a small area. You'll leave the rest of the system or machine uninsulated until you're done.
If you buy custom covers, then you can choose where to put access points. You can add entry points in precise places where you think you'll have to do work most often.
